Time Out Market, Chicago Chipman Design Architecture
Spanning 50,000 sq.-ft. across three floors, Time Out Market is a food and cultural hub in the burgeoning Fulton Market district of Chicago’s West Loop. The Chipman Design Architecture team paid homage to the area’s industrial history by installing a breathtaking skylight sprawling across the entire atrium. Honest materials such as blackened steel and poured concrete recall the building’s utilitarian past as a meatpacking plant with modern finishes such as vertically installed tile on bar fronts, Acacia wood community tables and stools and a striking ‘Chicago’ installation providing a graphic backdrop to the casual bleacher seating - reminiscent of a day at the ballpark.
This project received an INNOVATION AWARD for ADAPTIVE REUSE.
With the recent influx of popularity in food hall concepts, the project team was challenged to develop a concept that would provide an engaging experience as well as differentiation in the market. Design for the 19 kitchens was an ongoing collaboration between the client, the kitchen designer, the proposed Chicago chefs and the architectural design team. The environmental graphics and signage concepts reflected “the best of the city under one roof” goal, creating a strong visual identity reflecting the Time Out brand instead of individual chefs.
