Innovation Award for Digital Integration

Walmart and FITCH - now Landor & Fitch -- teamed to design a new look and feel focusing on a digitally enabled shopping experience for its 186,000-sq.-ft. store in Springdale, Ark.

Upon entry, a store directory points customers to departments. Oversized blue signs encourage customers to download the Walmart app and use “Item Finder” for a quicker, more seamless shopping experience.

The design team focused its efforts on creating navigation that was bold, purposeful, intuitive and put the customer in control.

Inspired by airport wayfinding, directional arrows and more frequent signage quickly point customers to their destinations. By integrating Walmart’s app navigation into each endcap, the team created consistent placement and a clear aisle numbering system.

By applying user interface principles to physical spaces, the design team leveraged the existing Walmart app, which did not require any new investments in technology.
